  • No undercover officers at Sunday protest: police

The police on Monday denied any use of undercover agents on Sunday’s march, after photos were being circulated online of several people dressed like anti-extradition protesters walking into the force’s headquarters.

Footage of a group of men dressed in t-shirts entering the barricaded police headquarters in Wan Chai was circulating on the social media from Sunday night with allegations that these were officers who infiltrated the protest returning to their base.

But Senior Superintendent of the PPRB, Kong Wing-cheung, said on Monday that they were in fact officers who had to walk to duty due to transport chaos.

He said the footage taken around 10:40pm was showing them returning to police headquarters to report for duty.

The police also said they had not deployed undercover officers during the rally on Sunday.

The officers said undercover agents were used in a protest at Causeway Bay on August 11 as it was an intelligence-led operation targeting some hardcore demonstrators who had organised and incited others to take violent action.

There were no arrest made from Friday to Sunday, the police said.

The force said since the protests started in June, 178 police officers had been injured. It added the uniformed officer who received burn injuries allegedly during an attack at the Tsim Sha Tsui Police Station on August 11 had been discharged hospital and is recovering.
