  • No plans to suspend polls, schools: CE

Chief Executive Carrie Lam says the administration has no plans to suspend schools or postpone this month's district council elections, despite an upsurge in civil unrest in recent days.

Speaking ahead of the weekly Executive Council meeting, Lam said the government did not want to cancel or delay the November 24 polls as it was important to respect the rights of the SAR's four million registered voters.

Her comments followed the publication of a full-page advertisement in several newspapers in which several former officials, academics and business leaders called on the government to ensure the elections went ahead and ran smoothly.

Signatories to the ad included the former financial secretary John Tsang, ex-housing minister Anthony Cheung and former head of the Chinese University Joseph Chung, as well as businessmen Ricky Wong and Allan Zeman.

Lam said Hong Kong people could not allow the protests to bring the territory to a standstill, where normal daily activities have to cease.
