For the third time this week, no new coronavirus cases have been confirmed in Hong Kong on Sunday, keeping the number of total infections here at 1,037.

Only 12 new infections have been confirmed in the SAR since Monday, April 20, with 11 cases classified as imported, and one who was a close contact of a previously-confirmed patient.

Zero cases were recorded on Monday and Friday as well.

The Centre for Health Protection also said one more patient who had previously recovered from Covid-19 has tested positive again – the ninth such case in Hong Kong.

And, despite the significant drop in the number of cases, it again appealed on the public to continue to maintain their distance from each other to minimise the risk of infection.

While senior secondary school students have been attending their Diploma of Secondary Education examinations since Friday, all schools remain closed indefinitely.

A mandatory closure of businesses deemed high risk, such as bars, karaokes and beauty parlours was extended earlier this week to May 7, as was a ban on gatherings of any more than four people in public.

Infectious diseases experts have urged caution, with some recommending that social distancing measures should only be relaxed if there are no new local infections for an extended period of time.

The Secretary for Health, Sophia Chan, warned in her Sunday blog that while there are signs that the epidemic is easing in Hong Kong, the pandemic across the globe remains very severe and unstable, and things here can change dramatically in a short period of time.

Chan said she hopes people here won't let their guards down, so that the city's anti-epidemic efforts won't be in vain.
