Lee Tsz-cheung talks to RTHK's Janice Wong

There is no immediate escape from the sweltering heat for Hong Kong as showers are not expected over the city until the weekend, the Observatory said on Tuesday.

The city has been experiencing a record-long spell of hot weather for almost two weeks now.

Hong Kong Observatory's senior scientific officer, Lee Tsz-cheung, said usually around this time the low pressure associated with the southwesterly monsoon should provide some rain. This year the monsoon is weak and late, so it won't be reaching the city until early June, he said.

But Lee provided some hope, saying the anti-cyclone conditions that are prevailing in the region will weaken by this weekend, bringing more clouds and some scattered showers over the city.

He told RTHK's Janice Wong that the current heatwave still hasn't breached the record set by the scorching May of 1963.
