The Hong Kong Observatory on Monday issued the Strong Wind Signal Number 3 at 5:10pm, with a warning that it may consider raising the No 8 signal in the early hours of Tuesday.

The observatory said that according to the current forecast track, Tropical Storm Nangka will be closest to the SAR by Monday night to early Tuesday morning, coming about 500 kilometres close to the south of Hong Kong.

But because of the combined effect of the storm and the northeast monsoon, local winds are expected to strengthen gradually during the overnight period, it said.

At 2 am, Tropical Storm Nangka was estimated to be about 440 kilometres south of Hong Kong (near 18.3 degrees north 113.9 degrees east) and forecast to move west or west-northwest at about 22 kilometres per hour in the general direction of the vicinity of Hainan Island and intensify gradually.

Members of the public should take note of the latest weather bulletin before leaving home on Tuesday morning, the observatory added.
