The Hong Kong Observatory says it expects to issue the typhoon number 8 signal at or before 10.40pm, as Severe Tropical Storm Higos edges closer to the city.
The observatory says Higos has intensified and adopted a track closer to Hong Kong and local winds may strenghten overnight.
Transport officials announced that some ferry services were ending early for the day.
At 8pm, Higos was estimated to be about 150 kilometres south-southeast of Hong Kong and was forecast to move northwest or west-northwest towards the coast of western Guangdong.
The Strong Wind Signal Number Three was issued at 2:20pm on Tuesday.
According to a senior scientific officer of the observatory, Kong Wai, winds will moderate later on Wednesday, but there will still be occasional showers on Thursday.
