  • New footage a breakthrough: Chow Tsz-lok's father

The father of university student Chow Tsz-lok who died during last year's anti-government protests has welcomed the emergence of new video footage which appears to capture the moment his son fell from height in a car park.

"It seems like a breakthrough, like a big step closer to the truth," said Chow Tak-ming.

There was an emotional outburst from the Chow family when Coroner David Ko played the video on Friday at the inquest into the 22-year-old's death, with Ko telling the court that he believed a moving shadow captured was likely to be the student falling.

Chow Tak-ming told reporters he felt sad when he saw the footage, but was happy about the new discovery, which was made by the coroner himself.

"I need to think about the footage, it was rather quick. Of course, it's sad to see my son’s last moment on camera... I’m glad that the judge has also spotted something. This is probably a breakthrough in the search for the truth," he said.

Asked whether he thought the police had been negligent in failing to spot the image, Chow Tak-ming said it was too early to say whether anyone should be blamed at this stage.

He again urged anyone who witnessed what happened at the Sheung Tak car park on November 4 last year to contact him and his lawyers.

The inquest was originally expected to take 25 days, but the coroner has told the jury it could have to be extended in light of the new discovery.
