  • New coronavirus cases drop to 2,777

Health officials said on Wednesday that Hong Kong's daily Covid tally might remain at a high level for some time, as they reported 2,777 new infections.

This was 477 fewer than the day before.

Of the new cases, 1,489 were confirmed via PCR tests in laboratories, while 1,288 were reported by people who took rapid self-tests.

The Controller of the Centre for Health Protection, Edwin Tsui, said experience from other places shows it is unlikely that the daily caseload will drop quickly.

He said as people gather during the upcoming Easter holiday, the number of Covid infections recorded might fluctuate, adding that the city could see hundreds or thousands of cases every day for a period of time.

Tsui encouraged people to make good use of rapid tests for Covid-19 to identify infections as early as possible and cut off transmission chains.

Meanwhile, authorities reported that another 111 people with Covid have died, including 84 patients who passed away at public hospitals in the past day.

More than 1.16 million people have been confirmed with Covid-19 and 8,247 have died in the Omicron outbreak, with a fatality rate of 0.71 percent.
