The coroner hearing the inquest into the death of Chow Tsz-lok during last year's protests told the court on Friday that he had found CCTV footage that he believes captures the moment when the university student apparently fell from height in a Tseung Kwan O car park.

Before presenting the footage, coroner David Ko warned those present in the court that they may find the content disturbing.

The footage appears to show a black shadow, believed to be Chow, falling onto the ground in the car park.

The image prompted an emotional outburst from the student's mother and other family members in court.

The coroner said he had asked the police to carefully map out all the CCTV cameras in the area, and would get experts to verify the time when the images were captured.

Meanwhile, Ko also told the court he has decided to list the Fire Services Department as an interested party so it could consider sending legal representatives to the hearing next week. He made the decision after it was found that the testimony of an ambulanceman who had given earlier on when his ambulance arrived at, and left the scene, were inconsistent with security camera footage.

The coroner then adjourned the proceedings.

On Thursday, Ko said he had found this “very important footage” when going through videos that had not been played in court. The police had previously testified that none of the CCTV cameras in the area captured Chow’s apparent fall.

Also on Thursday, one of the first doctors who treated the 22-year-old said the student could have lost consciousness before his plunge.

Dr Ray Leung from Queen Elizabeth Hospital told the coroner that people would normally use their arms to protect their bodies in a fall, but there were no bruises on Chow's limbs.

The jury has been told that the 25-day inquest may have to be extended because of the new findings.
