The mother of murder victim Poon Hiu-wing has rejected the Hong Kong police's invitation to a meeting at the last minute describing it as a waste of time, amid an ongoing tussle over suspect Chan Tong-kai's surrender to Taiwan.

RTHK learnt that the meeting was supposed to happen on Sunday morning, but the woman told reporters through a middle man that she decided to call off the event.

She said the police did not reply her on whether they would meet Taiwanese authorities to discuss Chan’s surrender, or if officers meeting her have the authority to make decisions on behalf of the police.

She has said that she doesn't want the meeting to become a show and waste everybody's time.

The mother later said the police again called her, but she stuck to her demands.

She said the police should make their response through the media, and even if another meeting is arranged, she has to make sure that the police have sincerity in holding talks with Taiwanese authorities over the case.

“If not, it would just be a waste of time, no matter how many phone calls the police make,” she said.

Last week, in her her first public appearance since the anti-extradition protests erupted last year, Poon's mother had said Chan should not delay his planned trip to Taiwan as it has been a year since his release from a Hong Kong prison.

She also presented a letter addressed to security secretary John Lee, asking John Lee to provide evidence to his Taiwan authorities instead of repeating government's official stance that there is nothing they can do officially.
