Taiwan authorities said on Thursday that murder suspect Chan Tong-kai can apply for his visa through the island's office in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong police say Chan has confessed to murdering his girlfriend in Taipei more than two years ago.

The SAR government used the case to justify its attempt last year to pass a controversial extradition law, which sparked months of mass protests before the legislation was scrapped.

The island's mainland affairs council says Chan can go to the Economic and Cultural Office in Admiralty to start the process.

It didn't express opposition to him having a lawyer or others helping with the visa application.
