The MTR is postponing the introduction of a new signalling system for the East Rail Line that had originally been due to be brought into service on Saturday, saying it was unsatisfactory and its stability needed to be improved.

The railway's Chief of Operating Sammy Wong says, in a hypothetical scenario, the system could route two trains to the same station at once. But he said the chance of this actually happening was extremely low.

"For this risk-setting situation, actually it will not affect our automatic train protection system - that is the train will keep a safe distance between the two trains, therefore train service or train safety will not be affected," he said.

Wong said the MTR wanted to finish the signalling system enhancement work as soon as possible but it had to be done properly to ensure safety.

The railway company refused to specify when they found out about the problem, only saying that testing had been ongoing since April.

East Rail services are unaffected and the old system remains in place.
