'MTR May Resume Full Service In Two Weeks' Time'

The government said on Friday that it's possible that MTR service could return to normal in one or two weeks’ time, if there are no further attacks on train stations by anti-government protesters.

The MTR Corporation has been closing train services at around 10pm to allow for repairs, since widespread attacks a fortnight ago after the government introduced an anti-mask law.

Speaking after taking part in an RTHK programme, the Secretary for Transport and Housing, Frank Chan, said that there’re a lot of repair, revamp and testing works still being carried out by MTR staff.

“It all depends whether or not there will be incoming damages. If everything remains normal, and there’s no further attack or damage, then I would say that one or two weeks would be possibly the target,” he told RTHK’s Janice Wong.

Earlier Chan had told the radio programme that the government has identified 20 sites for the construction of transitional housing.

It was announced in the policy address on Wednesday that the government plans to provide 10,000 transitional housing units in three years times for people in need.

Chan said most of the sites identified are temporary vacant government land, and some are sites the government plans to borrow from private owners.

Chan said the largest of the identified sites can accommodate 2,000 homes.
