The Hong Kong Journalists Association said on Friday that many press local members are opposed to the idea of having official accreditation of their identity.
It asked around 600 members earlier this month on how they think about proposals of having an official press registration given by the government.
Around 250 responded and 96 percent are against the idea.
It said most of them cited concerns of infringement on the freedom of the press, and are also worried that the move would pave the way for more censorship on the media.
Some are also worried that freelance or non full-time media workers could be affected if the government can choose who to give the press passes to, and that some independent journalists may not be able to get the accreditation as well.
The survey comes after reports that the government and police are considering issuing official press cards to journalists, despite the Chief Executive Carrie Lam dismissed the rumours.
