The Observatory's forecasters say they expect around half a dozen typhoons to pass within 500 kilometres of Hong Kong this year, as the first storm of the summer faded away with minimal impact.
The Strong Wind Signal No 3 was reduced to the Standby Signal No 1 at 10.40am on Sunday after being in place for almost 20 hours due to the approach of Typhoon Nuri. All signals were cancelled at 1.20pm.
The typhoon ultimately took a course well to the south of Hong Kong and was moving away to make landfall in southern Guangdong province. It was about 200 kilometres west of Hong Kong on Sunday morning.
"The rain belts of Nuri are affecting the coast of Guangdong and, for the weather of today, it will be mainly cloudy with a few squally showers and isolated thunderstorms," said Lee Tsz-cheung, senior scientific officer at the Observatory.
"We expect the local weather will remain unstable and showery on Monday and Tuesday."
The Observatory expects a total of between four and seven typhoons this year, although there's no way to predict their strength. The SAR experienced five typhoons last year.
