Gordon Chick talks to RTHK's Janice Wong

The Society for Community Organisation (Soco) has called on the government to build more alternative accommodation, such as container homes, after government data showed the waiting time for public housing has now surged to 5.1 years.

Gordon Chick, a community organiser of the group warned that the wait for a flat may increase to six years by 2020.

He said officials have underestimated the problem as in their report in 2014-15, they had said the waiting time would be only five years by 2020, but it has already reached that now.

He told RTHK's Janice Wong that the government can also consider giving out rental subsidies to help improve the living condition of public housing applicants who have been waiting for a flat for more than three years.
