  • More public spending a must, say demonstrators

The Society for Community Organisation, or SoCo, on Sunday staged a protest outside government headquarters, demanding more public spending in the upcoming budget.

The protesters included people from low-income households, subdivided flats tenants and the homeless. They said the administration should respond to their plight by giving them more relief measures with its huge surplus.

Community organiser Ng Wai Tung noted that the Community Care Fund's living subsidy scheme for the so-called "N-nothings", or people who don't get any kind of welfare help from the authorities, ended two years ago.

He said he thinks the scheme should make a comeback in this budget.
