The mental health situation of one-third of people here may have reached alarming levels. That's according to a survey done by Baptist Oi Kwan Social Service, using a widely-accepted 12 question psychiatric screening device called the General Health Questionnaire.

The NGO, which polled 2,100 people, said anyone who scored 15 points out of 36 would be in that category. Twenty percent of respondents said they feel mentally stressed all the time.

The survey also found that the younger generation, aged between 15 and 24, has poorer mental health than other age groups. Researcher Kitty Lok said this might be related to their unhealthy diet and lifestyle.

"If we look at their daily habits, this group of people drinks much less water and eats much less fruit and vegetables," she said.

Lok also said young people should pay more attention to their daily habits, like late nights.
