A mechanic was killed on Saturday after the lift he was working on suddenly ascended and trapped him against the shaft ceiling. He had apparently reached partly out of the top of the lift when it moved.

The accident occurred at On Yam Estate in Kwai Chung around 3pm.

The 62-year-old mechanic was was certified dead after being sent to hospital. Another worker who was helping carrying out regular maintenance was also injured.

The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department says both workers are registered mechanics, and it will investigate the incident.

It added that the elevator in question will remain out of service until repairs are completed and a registered engineer gives it a thorough check.
