  • Maryknoll pupils urge Helen Yu to uphold truth

A group of secondary students from Maryknoll Convent School in Kowloon Tong knelt in front of their school on Wednesday morning – urging one of their former students, Helen Yu, to uphold her conscience as she becomes a new member of the Independent Police Complaints Council.

Some students of the girls' school held placards and chanted slogans, echoing an open letter issued earlier by a group of pupils and former students demanding Yu act as a role model for the school and uphold democracy and freedom.

One of the students who was at the protest said she felt ashamed that Yu, a retired civil servant, is a fellow Maryknoller.

In response to the open letter, Yu had issued a statement saying she appreciates the reminder from fellow-Maryknollers and that she remains true to the school motto of upholding the truth.

"In whatever role, I pledge myself to service for the truth and for the interest of our community. The letter ‘y’ in my name is a constant reminder to ask ‘why’ in the quest for the truth," Yu said.

Yu, who was recently appointed to the IPCC, had said earlier that it was not yet time to set up an independent inquiry panel to look into the police's handling of the recent protests.
