A 78-year-old grandfather was jailed for 11 years on Friday after pleading guilty to raping his five-year-old granddaughter.

The elderly man admitted to assaulting her twice over the last two years.

High Court judge Anthea Pang said the case is heartbreaking as it caused a serious psychological impact on such a young girl.

She noted that a trauma report shows that she has often been unable to sleep and is scared of men of all ages. She is also said to have lost interest in playing with friends of a similar age.

The report said the girl is still angry and sad, and she acts out physically as if she's involved in a struggle.

It also details how the victim's mother is blaming herself for not finding out about the matter earlier.

Justice Pang also said the report showed that the case has had a serious psychological impact to both the mother and the girl, and the girl's self-image development could well be affected when she grows up and learns more about what happened.

The judge criticised the defendant for neglecting the feelings of his granddaughter and treating her as a sexual subject.
