A man was sentenced to four months in jail on Monday for falsely claiming that he was attacked by an officer inside a police station.
Speaking to reporters outside West Kowloon Magistracy where the 46-year-old defendant was sentenced, chief inspector Chau Kwok-kuen from the Complaints Against Police Office (CAPO) said he pleaded guilty to the charge of making false report of commission of an offence.
Chau said that on July 2, CAPO received a complaint from the man who alleged he was assaulted while he was in custody at Mong Kok Police Station. He had been arrested in connection with a theft case.
Chau said that an investigation by CAPO found that the man had never been assaulted. He was arrested and charged after the police consulted the Secretary for Justice.
Chau said that CAPO handles every complaint fairly and impartially, and that anyone who makes false accusations against police officers will face serious consequences, including criminal prosecution.
