A man was in a critical condition on Monday following violent attacks at Yuen Long MTR Station the night before, with five others said to be seriously injured in hospital.
A further 40 or so people had sought treatment following the violent rampage by gangs of men at the station, the Hospital Authority said.
The opposition camp, including the Democratic Party, Civic Party and Labour Party, strongly condemned the assaults which appeared to have been aimed at people returning from the extradition bill march on Hong Kong Island.
They accused the police of "cooperating with triad members" and allowing them to attack innocent people. Many people had complained that officers did not arrive at the scene until well after the assaults had ended.
Shocking footage shared on social media showed the gangs of men, all wearing white t-shirts, beating MTR passengers with bamboo sticks. Some of the victims on board a train at the station screamed as the men stormed inside the carriages to continue their attack.
The Democratic Party claimed that suspected triad members had warned protesters not to set foot in Yuen Long on Sunday.
It said members had repeatedly tried to contact the police when the attacks began, but officers took so long to arrive the mob had dispersed.
The MTR station closed early for the night following the violence. But a few dozen men later forced open the shutters and stormed inside once again.
