Police say a 24-year-old man has been charged with wounding with intent after an officer was stabbed during Wednesday's protests.

The man was due to appear in Eastern Magistrates' Court later on Friday.

Detective chief inspector Kai Tsz-lun confirmed that officers took action after receiving a tip-off and boarded a plane in the early hours of Thursday to arrest the suspect.

Kai said the plane hadn't closed its door when officers arrived there.

He said investigations were ongoing and more arrests could be made.

Thousands of people protested on Wednesday against the Beijing-imposed national security law. Police said the officer in question suffered multiple injuries, including a stab wound to his left shoulder.
