Hong Kong deputies to the National People's Congress who are attending the annual meeting in Beijing later this month will be tested for Covid-19 in Shenzhen before flying to the capital.

Following a meeting with Liaison Office officials, the leader of the Hong Kong delegation, Ma Fung-kwok, said the plan was to have the deputies tested on May 19, and they will depart for Beijing the next day if the results are negative.

Ma added that this year's NPC session would only last seven days instead of the usual 10, and precautionary measures will be taken to prevent the spread of the virus.

Their movement will be limited to their hotel and the meeting venue and they won't be allowed to move around or meet people freely.

The NPC, which draws 5,000 delegates to the capital, had been due to begin on March 5, but was delayed due to the virus outbreak.
