Officials at the central government's representative office in Hong Kong have been left red-faced after a staff member hung the national flag upside down on Friday morning.

The Liaison Office of the Central People's Government – often a target for protest from pro-democracy groups – has apologised for the incident.

It blamed the incident on a front-line member of staff, who it said had been reprimanded, and pledged to put procedures in place to prevent similar problems in the future.

Images of the upside-down flag have been widely circulated on social media in Hong Kong.
