Several leaders of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements in China on Thursday said they've been charged with organising the June Fourth candlelight vigil last week.

Lee Cheuk-yan, Albert Ho and Richard Tsoi are accused of inciting others to join an illegal assembly.

Lee, who's chairman of the alliance, said media tycoon Jimmy Lai has also been charged.

This year's vigil had not received police approval, but representatives of the alliance defied the ban and went to Victoria Park to mark the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre.

Lee says the case will have a chilling effect on freedom of assembly.
