Legco president Andrew Leung has imposed a new rule banning lawmakers from locking desk drawers inside the chamber to allow checks to be carried out, after recent disruptions to proceedings involving smelly objects.
The Legco secretariat said on Monday that desk drawers at lawmakers' seats will be regularly cleaned and inspected.
Last week, pro-democracy lawmakers Chu Hoi-dick, Ray Chan and Ted Hui disrupted two meetings on the national anthem bill by splashing a foul-smelling liquid inside the Legco chamber and another conference room in the building.
Several members of the pro-establishment camp later filed a report to the police over the incidents, one of which led to firefighters being called in.
Chu told the press that biofertiliser had been used in one of the stunts.
A week before, Hui had been apprehended by security guards after rushing to the Legco president's seat with a rotting plant.
On Friday, police were again called to Legco over a foul smell coming from a bag found under a lawmaker's seat.
