  • Lawmakers' pay stopped over non-payment of fines

Legco president Andrew Leung says the secretariat will stop paying three lawmakers who hurled smelly objects and liquids during a number of recent meetings until they pay around HK$252,000 in compensation for the mess caused.

Speaking to reporters in Legco on Tuesday, Leung said pan-democratic lawmakers Ted Hui, Ray Chan and Chu Hoi-dick have so far not paid penalties imposed on them.

"The commission [has] instructed the secretariat not to process their reimbursement [of] operating expenses until they pay up the remaining money they owe to Legco for soiling the carpet," Leung said.

Legco had said last month that Hui needs to pay HK$52,000, while Chan and Chu each owe Legco around HK$100,000 in cleaning, carpet changing and odour removal fees.

The three had thrown smelly objects and liquids inside the council chamber and a conference room in a bid to disrupt Legco's scrutiny of the contentious National Anthem bill, which was eventually passed on June 4.
