One of the four Occupy activists jailed on Wednesday – social welfare sector lawmaker Shiu Ka-chun – was taken from the Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre to hospital on Thursday after apparently suffering from an irregular heartbeat.

Reverend Chu Yiu-ming, who escaped a custodial sentence for his role in the Umbrella Movement, said Shiu had been taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment.

It wasn't known whether Shiu would be kept in hospital.

The state of his health was brought up during mitigation pleas at the activists' trial, with his lawyer telling the District Court that the legislator suffers from serious diabetes which affects his eyesight.

Along with League of Social Democrats activist Raphael Wong, Shiu was given an eight-month prison term and he now risks losing his seat in Legco. Occupy co-founders Benny Tai and Chan Kin-man were jailed for 16 months.

Speaking to reporters after visiting the men in prison, Chu quoted Tai, Chan and Wong as saying that they are doing fine.
