Police Commissioner Chris Tang has told state broadcaster CCTV that the proposed national security legislation for the SAR will help combat what he called "Hong Kong independence forces" and help strengthen investor confidence in the city.

Giving an interview to the state-run channel, Tang said the new law being drawn up in Beijing won’t affect people's rights and freedoms.

The police chief said the force will communicate closely with various government departments to make sure the new law is accurately implemented to safeguard national security.

He said the only thing he wants to tell “radical violent activists” is that the police will bring them into justice.

Legal experts, human rights organisations and political parties in Hong Kong have raised concerns about the new law, saying it will curtail freedoms guaranteed under the Special Administrative Region’s mini constitution. But the SAR government has dismissed such concerns.
