Jurors in the rioting trial of Edward Leung were told by a judge on Monday to ignore their own political beliefs and not to be influenced by media reports, as both the prosecution and defence wrapped up their cases.

Leung, a former spokesman for the localist group Hong Kong Indigenous, and four other people are accused of taking part in a riot in Mong Kok during Lunar New Year in 2016.

The five deny the charges, although Leung has pleaded guilty to one count of assaulting police.

In her directions to the nine-member jury, High Court Judge Anthea Pang stressed that their decisions must be made based solely on the evidence presented in court.

She added that even though Leung admitted to assaulting police, the jury must not automatically assume that he had also participated in rioting.
