Lennon Walls put up by anti-extradition bill protesters were taken down at several places after groups responding to pro-government lawmaker Junius Ho's call to "Clean Hong Kong" went around removing posters and stickers put up their rivals.
Minor skirmishes were also reported in some place.
Scuffles broke out at Lok Fu, Yuen Long, Tsuen Wan, Mong Kok, Ho Man Tin and Wong Tai Sin when Ho's supporters tore down posters and sticky notes from the Lennon Walls there.
Police officers were on hand to separate the different parties, and in some cases escorted the pro-government supporters away.
Near Tsuen Wan station, a woman tearing down Lennon Wall posters threw a bag at a journalist, while another man shoved a cameraman.
In Yuen Long, some of the clean Hong Kong campigners were escorted away in a police van.
Earlier, online footage showed Ho at a town square in Tuen Mun, with supporters also sweeping with brooms and dust-pans.
However an argument broke out when he later showed up in Shau Kei Wan. Residents shouted insults at him and asked him to leave.
Ho had previously said the day-long "Clean Hong Kong" campaign was aimed at removing the Lennon Walls in all 18 districts – but he announced on Friday night that his team should only clean up rubbish on the streets due to "safety concerns".
His original plan had sparked fears of potential violence between pro- and anti-government supporters. On Friday afternoon police appealed for calm, while anti-government protesters had vowed to defend themselves if they came under attack at the Lennon Walls.
