Pro-Beijing lawmaker Junius Ho has hit back at a decision by his former university in Britain to strip his of an honorary doctorate in law, complaining that he's fallen victim to "political suppression" and hinted that he could take legal action.
Anglia Ruskin University announced late on Monday this it was withdrawing the degree it conferred in 2011 after an investigation, as Ho's conduct had caused "increasing concern".
Ho said the decision was procedurally unfair as he had been given no opportunity to respond to any of the claims against him. He said he would reserve his legal rights over the matter.
Ho said the university had acted under pressure from a member of Britain's House of Lords, David Alton, who wrote to Anglia Ruskin last week to ask why it continued to honour Ho despite his use of inflamatory language and his alleged support for triads involved in political violence.
Ho has always denied that video released of him warmly greeting a group of white-clad men in Yuen Long shortly after a mob in similar attire assaulted scores of people at the town's MTR station represented his endorsement of the violence. He claimed he was merely greeting some constituents.
