Pro-Beijing lawmaker Junius Ho has called for clemency for a master's degree student expelled from the Polytechnic University.

He told RTHK's City Forum that the punishment was severe, and suggested he should get a second chance.

Gerald Ho was one of four students punished after a clash with university officials over a student bulletin board, known as the "democracy wall", where posters had been put up calling for Hong Kong's independence.

While Gerald Ho was expelled following a meeting of the university's disciplinary committee, former student union leader Lam Wing-hang was suspended for a year, and two other students were ordered to do community service.

Junius Ho, who's also a member of the Lingnan University's council, believes students should get an opportunity to redeem themselves:.

"Give them a chance to learn from the mistake," Ho said.
