District Court judge Kwok Wai-kin will not hear a case relating to anti-government protests last year, after he was strongly criticised for comments made in sentencing in a case last week.

The judge sentenced a man who admitted attacking three people at a pro-democracy "Lennon Wall" with a chopper to 45 months in prison.

But he was accused of bias after describing the attacker a 'victim' of the anti-government protests, and said that protesters had “ruthlessly trampled on his right to work and live".

The attacker, Tony Hung, had worked as a tour guide. He had pleaded guilty to three charges of wounding with intent and had handed himself in.

Kwok was originally scheduled to hear a case involving a taxi driver accused of possessing petrol bombs.

But the judiciary said Chief District Judge Justin Ko decided to take over the case after taking note of the controversy over Kwok's earlier judgement.
