Fernando Cheung speaks to RTHK's Damon Pang
Joshua Wong is now out of solitary confinement, according to the Labour Party’s Fernando Cheung, who visited the prominent activist at the Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre on Saturday.
Wong had been put into isolation at the centre’s medical ward after he was told that X-rays had found “something dodgy” in his stomach when he was first remanded on November 23.
Cheung said Wong had spent 72 hours under bright lights and wasn't allowed to move around, and the Correctional Services Department hadn’t offered Wong any further explanation about the checkup.
Wong, along with former leaders of the now-disbanded Demosisto group, Agnes Chow and Ivan Lam, are awaiting sentencing after they all pleaded guilty to organising and taking part in a siege of the police headquarters in June last year.
Wong is scheduled to be sentenced on December 2.
Cheung said the activist is doing okay and in good spirits.
"He feels less powerless and more relaxed behind bars, because he faces less pressure now that he doesn't have to constantly take interviews on the state of Hong Kong," he said.
"And number two, everyone would understand he couldn't do much behind bars."
Cheung quoted Wong as saying that even though the civic society is facing "harsh suppression", he's still hopeful for the future.
"As long as people keep their spirits up, [and] as long as we are still here [in Hong Kong], the campaign will be back."
