The Commission of Inquiry looking into reports of substandard construction work in the tunnels of Hung Hom MTR Station will officially begin its hearings on May 27, it was announced on Monday.
While the commission has already held an initial set of hearings on earlier allegations of steel bar cutting at the station extension of the Shatin-Central Link, this expanded part of the inquiry will focus on revelations that surfaced later about the north and south approach tunnels, as well as the stabling sidings.
Reports said there have been unauthorised design changes, defective stitch joints, as well as a loss of key supervisory and inspection records.
The government asked the commission to extend the probe to also cover these claims.
Up to 35 witnesses will be summoned to give evidence during the 17-day hearing.
Even though the commission is expected to submit its final report to the Chief Executive on August 30, chairman Michael Hartmann, said more time may be needed and he isn’t ruling out postponing the submission date.
