Dr Pierre Chan speaks to RTHK's Janice Wong
The lawmaker representing the medical sector has spoken about fears among injured civilians and medical staff treating them of being arrested, calling it "white terror".
Dr Pierre Chan, who is a qualified medical practitioner, said that's why many people caught in clashes between police and anti-extradition protesters were reluctant to go to hospital for treatment.
He cited the example of a Yuen Long resident who was injured during an attack by suspected triad members at the MTR station there on July 21, but chose not to seek treatment at hospital.
"I feel discomfort because of this," Chan said. "The problem is that now, many injured persons did not want to go to hospital, not because of the medical care problem [but] because of the fear of being arrested."
Chan said he has gone to various troubled areas to treat the injured, He said "white terror" applies to him and other medical professionals as well, who are at risk of being arrested and charged.
He also expressed concern about an increase in the number of people getting hurt since the unrest began two months ago.
Chan pointed out that most of the clashes were limited to Admiralty and a number of other sites in June. But in recent weeks, they spread to residential areas such as Sham Shui Po, Wong Tai Sin and Taikoo Shing.
And he said by the time he arrived at the scene, people had left already.
"The scenario and the situation is changing and also the number of people affected is increasing," he said.
