IT sector lawmaker Charles Mok fears the government could shut down the internet out of ignorance, in an effort to stem the ongoing anti-government protests which are usually organised online.

Executive Councillor Ip Kwok-him said over the weekend that the government would not rule out the possibility of an internet ban.

"An internet shutdown isn't going to be effective," Mok said. "That was developed over the past 40 years to be resilient."

Mok told RTHK that moves to stop access to messaging sites used by protesters would fail.

Mok said even Russia had tried and failed to shut down Telegram, an app favoured by anti-government protesters.

He said government officials, including Exco members and the Chief Executive, had no sense about technology.
