  • Hundreds pay tribute to teenager Chan Yin-lam

Hundreds of people took part in three separate memorials in Tseung Kwan O and Kwun Tong on Sunday night to pay tribute to a teenager whose body was found in the sea off Yau Tong six months ago.

Although the police have classified the death of Chan Yin-lam, 15, as suicide and ruled out foul play, many remain unconvinced that the girl – a competitive swimmer said to have been actively involved in anti-extradition protests before her death – would have taken her own life.

Her mother had said in a TV interview that she believes her daughter committed suicide and pleaded with people not to harass the family or continue to speculate over her death, only for sceptics to question the identity of the woman interviewed.

Some students at the Hong Kong Design Institute have previously staged rowdy protests to demand to see full security footage of the girl the last time she was seen on campus.

On Sunday, mourners laid out bouquets of flowers and lit candles at a makeshift shrine set up for Chan at a car park in Tseung Kwan O.

Police kept a tight watch over the proceedings and searched some who went to pay tribute to Chan.

Reports say at least two people were taken away.

Other memorials were held at the girl’s former school, and at the waterfront in Kwun Tong.
