Officials say checks are to be carried out on about 300 lifts across the territory of the same model as one involved in a serious accident in Tsuen Wan on Sunday.

A couple were seriously injured when a lift in a block at Waterside Plaza suddenly zoomed up from a lower floor, where another passenger had got out, and crashed into the top of the building, which is more than 30 storeys high.

The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) said it was looking into the possibility that the accident was caused by a braking malfunction.

It said a preliminary investigation showed the lift's cables were intact and there may have been a loss of traction between the cables and the lift's wheels.

The EMSD said it had asked contractors to complete special checks on lifts of the same model within the next fortnight.

Louis Szeto, a past chairman of the Mechanical, Marine, Naval Architecture and Chemical Division of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, said Sunday's accident was "very rare".

Szeto told RTHK's Priscilla Ng that regular inspections should have detected any irregularities with the braking system.
