Hongkongers have generally become less willing to help others, a study by the University of Hong Kong revealed on Tuesday.
The Altruism Index, developed by the university's Centre for Suicide Research and Prevention, dropped slightly last year to 5.12 out of a maximum high of 10, down from 5.25 in 2016.
The survey of about 1,200 people found that fewer carried out volunteer work or donated money in 2017 than the year before.
The centre's director, Professor Paul Yip, who carried out the study said the more people help others, the happier and more satisfied with life they become.
Yip said the government should provide more opportunities for people to take part in volunteering.
