The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) on Monday reported 431 new Covid cases – similar to the previous day – as well as the deaths of a further 18 patients.

Officials said 242 infections were confirmed by PCR tests, while the rest were reported by people who took self-tests.

Among the new cases, 18 were imported.

Chuang Shuk-kwan of the CHP said one of the imported cases involved a traveller who tested positive 12 days after he flew in from Nepal.

She noted that the man had contracted the virus in Nepal in February, and that he could have been infected again in Hong Kong.

She said officials would carry out genetic sequencing as they look into the case.

Meanwhile, Chuang said 13 students and six teachers had reported Covid-19 infections to the CHP on Monday as more schools resumed face-to-face classes.

She said it's believed they contracted the virus in the community rather than on campus.

More than 1.18 million people in Hong Kong have been confirmed with the coronavirus so far amid the latest Omicron outbreak – 9,054 of whom have died.
