  • Hong Kong reports 430 new coronavirus cases

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) on Wednesday reported 430 new coronavirus cases – 83 more than the previous day.

Among the new cases, 222 were confirmed by PCR tests and the rest were reported by people who took self-tests.

Officials said there were 15 imported infections and eight newly recorded Covid-related deaths.

Chuang Shuk-kwan of the CHP said new infections could rise in the wake of the easing of social distancing rules and as people return to work and school.

"Even if there's a rebound in cases, it's expected. We will monitor whether the rebound will be big," she said.

As face-to-face classes gradually resume, authorities said seven students and one teacher tested positive for the virus on Wednesday, including a pair of siblings from one of the schools.

More than 1.19 million people in Hong Kong have been confirmed with the coronavirus so far amid the latest Omicron outbreak – 9,069 of whom have died.
