Ip Kin-yuen speaks to RTHK's Priscilla Ng

Critics and supporters of jailed Occupy Central founder Benny Tai are piling pressure on the University of Hong Kong over how it will deal with the associate law professor.

One group of pro-establishment alumni has been vociferously calling for Tai’s immediate termination, saying he should no longer be allowed to teach after he was convicted of nuisance-related charges and sent to prison. Tai is serving a 16-month jail term, pending an appeal.

But the HKU Alumni Concern Group says the university should take into consideration Tai’s altruistic intentions of launching the civil-disobedience campaign in 2014, and handle the issue carefully.

The group’s convenor, lawmaker Ip Kin-yuen, said Tai’s actions did not serve his own personal interests, but he was fighting for social justice and democracy.

Ip added that since Tai is appealing his conviction, the University should not prematurely launch disciplinary procedures ahead of the outcome.

The lawmaker warned that the public will be paying close attention to how the university treats Tai, “and I think it is very very important that the university will uphold the principle of fairness.”

he concern group will publish full-page advertisements in local newspapers on Thursday to argue its case.
