Health Secretary Sophia Chan said the government has stepped up precautionary measures to guard against the transmission of Covid-19 through imported chilled food, after mainland authorities claimed to have found the virus on imported food and its packaging.
The minister wrote on her blog that over a thousand samples of frozen food and their packaging have been tested, with all coming back negative.
She added that authorities have also been providing free voluntary tests to staff working at licensed cold stores, adding that more than 2,000 workers at the stores have so far tested negative for the virus.
The secretary said the stores have been asked to enhance their cleaning and disinfection procedures to curb the potential spread of the coronavirus.
She also urged Hong Kongers to stay home and avoid taking part in social gatherings as they ring in the new year.
