The chairman of the Association of Heads of Secondary Schools, Teddy Tang, has called on the government to hold an independent inquiry into the extradition protests.

"I think this is the only solution that the government should do," he said. "Because it will serve as a platform for different stakeholders to voice out their demands and study the root cause of the incident."

Tang also said schools couldn't do much to calm angry students and that this responsibility lies largely with the government.

He said generations of young people would lose their faith in the government - and core values like peace and rationality - if officials fail to quell public anger.
