Despite being delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic, the World Green Organisation is hoping to host a series of recycling roadshows from next month. The green group says it collected more than 300,000 plastic bottles at similar events last year.

The group's chief executive, William Yu, says it's a milestone that Hong Kong will have its own plastics recycling facility by the end of the year, which can process polyethylene terephthalate (PET) beverage bottles, as well as high-density polyethylene (HDPE) cleaning and shampoo bottles.

"Now Hong Kong will enter into another phase because we have the facilities," Yu said. "Hopefully for this facility we can further convert all these collected plastics into useful recycle material."

Yu said he hoped people could build a habit of recycling. He said, last year, the group set up more than 200 collection points and spoke to people in shopping malls and buildings.

The plant, at EcoPark in Tuen Mun, is run by New Life Plastics.

According to the company's website, it is a joint venture between Baguio Waste Management, ALBA Group Asia and Swire Coca-Cola. The bottles will be recycled into flake and pellets and on-sold to manufacturers, the website says.
