The government said on Wednesday that it will offer nasal spray flu vaccines to some schoolchildren for the first time in a trial programme ahead of the winter flu season.

The Centre for Health Protection said the nasal spray can provide children with similar protection against the flu virus as traditional vaccines.

Dr Ada Lin from the centre said the authorities have procured 2,000 shots of the nasal spray flu vaccines for the trial.

“In local setting, there has not been experience on the widespread use of the vaccine. The main objective of piloting the use of the vaccine in the school outreach this year is to test the feasibility and the logistical arrangement in the application of the vaccine,” she said.

The trial is part of an outreach programme under which doctors will be sent to hundreds of primary schools and kindergartens to vaccinate children against flu starting from October.

So far, more than 430 primary schools and 700 kindergartens have signed up for the programme.
